Who wants to spend the holidays waiting in long lines or getting paper cuts from wrapping so many presents? Sometimes we get so caught up in all of the festivities that we forget to stop and appreciate the sweet and simple things… like homemade gifts, particularly the edible ones.

I like what InspiredBites has to say when she talks about her Almond-Cardamom Christmas Cookies. Her idea of a great holiday gift? A Christmas cookie basket.

Fruit cake! It can be a good thing, especially if you need to provide gifts for a crowd. Joan’s Fruit Cake Cups by Mama come in the perfect gift-giving size. Consider giving these away as party favors this holiday season; take a look at her tasty recipe!

Though it’s hard to believe, not everyone has a sweet tooth as big as mine! But that doesn’t mean those folks won’t appreciate a gift made from pantry ingredients. VickiCarlson posted a recipe for Cinnamon Ornaments, you don’t eat these! Instead, you cut them out with cookie cutters and decorate them with puff paint (sounds like the recipe for a new family tradition)!

There are so many more ideas! For instance, you can make marshmallows from scratch, use cookie cutters to cut them out then drench them with chocolate… follow CrissCut’s Chocolate Covered Marshmallow recipe if that sounds tempting. And what about JenniferDube’s Kahlua Gingerbread Cutouts?

Skip the trip to the mall this year and let’s get cookin’, instead!

You won’t be tempted to fall back on fish sticks and frozen pizzas when you take a look at these healthy and tasty options for a filling family dinner. So you’ve got a finicky crowd to feed and only so much time to cook. Make one meal that’ll take everyone by surprise, in a good way. Let’s just say that no one will be asking for ketchup or barbecue sauce, they’ll actually like what they’re tasting!

Let’s start with a category that doesn’t get the attention it deserves, especially where family dinners are concerned: vegetarian food! RockNRollJane says her Lentil Tacos are so good, you won’t even miss the beef. This is also an affordable meal, RockNRollJane says that with a bag of lentils you can feed a family for under $1!

How about an old favorite that most folks love? Lasagna with a twist… or a sombrero? Try Ktbnkr’s Mexican Lasagna. Easy and fun to make? That’s what she says about it. And if you’re looking for another mexican classic, try Mytastytreasures’ Arroz con Pollo.

What about breakfast? Tired of the same old bowl of sugary cereal? Plan ahead, just a little :). Bsherrill’s Freezer Breakfast Burritos are great for taking on the bus, in the car, or even munching on during a quick break. Just warm ‘em up and they’ll fill you up in no time!

Let’s not forget about the casserole, a well-known American family meal that should have its own section on a food pyramid ;)! Well, maybe not… but you might think so after trying MelissaWelch’s Hearty Chicken and Noodle Casserole.

Milk, butter (and lots of it), salt, pepper, boiled potatoes… do you have these key ingredients on hand for today’s post? They’re the basics needed to whip, mix or mash up a creamy bowl of mashed potatoes. But what’s the special something in your bowl of mashed potatoes?

Baker2lm brings an unconventional ingredient to the mix with her Baked Mashed Potatoes with Parmesan Cheese and Bread Crumbs. The bread crumbs caught my attention. I love baking mashed potatoes after cooking them on the stove, all for that golden crust… I have a feeling the bread crumbs add a bit more color and crunch, though.

Cdrier’s Kicked up Bacon-Cheese Mashed Potatoes certainly wouldn’t last very long at my house. I don’t know if we can call bacon the secret ingredient in this tasty recipe :). I have a feeling everyone will know what’s cookin’ as soon as it starts to crisp up in the pan! These mashed potatoes are cheesy and buttery, too.

Stuart suggests that you can even dress up mashed potatoes, in his recipe for Elegant Mashed Potatoes with Blue Cheese. Sour cream is an ingredient I don’t hear enough about in mashed potato recipes!

What other savory ingredients should I add to my next batch of mashed potatoes?

The sugar cookie is the definition of a classic holiday cookie. Whether you prefer yours frosted or not, we’ve got so many different sugar cookie recipes, you’re bound to find the perfect one for you! Tired of vanilla flavored and orange zested cookies? You’ve come to the right place.

How about something that’s a cross between a gingerbread cookie and a sugar cookie? We’re talking about TankHolmes’ Molasses Sugar Cookies. If you’re a soft and chewy sugar cookie fan, you’ll love these. Molasses, like honey, makes cookies soft and malleable… and with all the spices, even the neighbors will be drooling over these cookies.

Angelie’s got a recipe for those on special diets. Can’t eat dairy or eggs? You can still enjoy a cookie or two with santa this year, thanks to Angelie’s Dairy and Egg Free Sugar Cookie recipe. Need a gluten-free option? Try Tallmisto’s Gluten-Free Lemon Cookies.

Chocolate isn’t just for Valentine’s Day. Try howtoeatacupcakedotnet’s Giant Chocolate Sugar Cookies. And why does it have to be all about the plain ol’ sugar cookie, especially when bsherill’s Brown Sugar Cookies are on the holiday cookie tray!

Don’t forget the frosting. lwilkosz’s Icing for Cut-Out Sugar Cookies will work on each one of these cookies… unless you eat them all before making the frosting! :)

Bring a little bit of extra flavor to your holiday table with a non-traditional side using a very familiar ingredient… the sweet potato! The vitamin A enriched root vegetable is known for being sweet and delicious, but not everyone loves eating a marshmallow covered sweet potato concoction that includes anything from nuts to pineapple.

For something savory, with a hint of natural sweetness, preheat your oven to 425 and bake ValS’s Oven Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Onions. Once it’s in the oven, you can pretty much forget about it; it’s that simple. But dinner guests won’t forget to ask you for the recipe :).

Looking for something spicy? Mitch’s Chipotle Smashed Sweet Potatoes are buttery and flavorful, the only thing that makes them a little sweet is the natural flavor of the sweet potatoes.

Momofsixplus1’s recipe is the ideal fall treat. It uses quite a few of our favorite seasonal ingredients, from cranberries to warm maple syrup. Enjoy her Maple Cranberry Sweet Potatoes during dinner or for dessert.

I know you’ve heard about twice baked potatoes. But since we’re talking about sweet potatoes, we need to mention KennySD’s Twice Baked Sweet Potatoes. Brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg… these potatoes smell just like the holidays when they’re baking.

Fast, easy and cheap. You wouldn’t typically describe chili that way, delicious is usually good enough. Chili will please a crowd and your pocketbook. But… these recipes will also please your palate, they’ve got more to offer than just a hearty serving of your favorite magical fruit :).

OrchidGirl1979’s starting a new trend. Think of a pot pie, now imagine chili beneath a savory crust instead of chicken. She doesn’t just top the chili with cornbread, corn and minced poblano peppers are folded into the dough, making every bite of her Chili topped with Cornbread a flavorful one.

Snoo combines South of the Border ingredients with seasonal vegetables in her Pinto Bean Chili with Corn and Winter Squash. If you’re hosting a nice dinner and want to serve up something warm and elegant, this is the meal to make.

Since Friday’s the day to unwind, go for a recipe that won’t take all evening to make. MagnoliaMom’s Easy Chili is the ideal meal for busy families. Don’t forget, this month’s Demy Holiday Recipe Contest is soon coming to a close! So hurry up and submit those tasty holiday recipes… we want everything from pies to your wackiest stuffing recipe. Anything original from your holiday menu goes!

Sticking to a classic pumpkin pie recipe this year? Why not mix up your holiday menu by including one of these delicious desserts. After all, who just has one slice of pumpkin pie for dessert? Show those you love just how thankful you are to have them in your life by serving them something a little special :).

If the sun’s shining where you are, and you want something a little different and cool but still seasonal for dessert this Thanksgiving, then try a Popsicle! Momofsixplusone’s Pumpkin Pie-Sicles are unlike any holiday treat I’ve ever seen. Basic ingredients, like butternut squash and cream, go into making this a stand-out dessert.

Foodycat’s also got a dessert that goes perfectly with something cold. Her Rosemary-scented Apple and Almond Dessert is like a cobbler in that it can be served with ice cream, but the similarities end there. If you like pancakes, you just might like this dessert. Find out why she says her dessert is “something a bit different”.

SoCalPastryChef’s got a recipe for The Sweet(est) Potato Pie that’s really got me curious… and hungry. Nothing but fresh ingredients go into this pie. Guests might think you’ve served them a typical pumpkin pie, but they’ll be pleasantly surprised after the first bite :).

Halloween’s only a few days away. Are you stocked up on enough candy? Need a few more ideas for the perfect homemade sweet treat? We’re not sure these will help keep the ghosts and goblins away; sticky fingers will find it difficult to resist these seasonal desserts.

Speaking of fingers, Figueroa’s Witch’s Finger Cookies are spooky and delicious. This is the kind of treat that might reach for you! Don’t worry, though, it’s just a sweet almond cookie!

Trick or treat? No need to choose between the two. PKvst2’s Mini Burger Cookies look like burgers, but they don’t come with tomato slices or a special sauce! All you’ll need to put these together are a few vanilla wafers, peppermint chocolate patties and frosting! They’re the definition of an edible craft.

If there’s candy in the house, then you’ve probably got what you need to make Bujvary’s Marshmallow Witches. Glenda the good witch has nothing on these sweet witches! Why? Because they’re made out of chocolate, peanut butter cups, coconut flakes and vanilla frosting. The only thing scary about these cute witches is that they’ll magically keep you coming back for more. :)

This year, you’ll be able to leave the jack o’ lantern full of candy alone! Because, whether you’re passing out candy, or trick o’ treating with little ones, you’ll enjoy these snacks.

Rpeters9568’s Harvest Pumpkin Dip with Cinnamon Chips sounds like it could be a dessert, and though it does remind me of pumpkin pie… it’s also a chips and dip recipe! Ever thought of sprinkling cinnamon on chips?

Cndrela13’s Fresh Salsa is for savory snack lovers. But try salsa on more than just chips! Think about marinating your favorite cut of chicken in her fresh salsa, or add a few tablespoonsful to some beans, with cheese, and you’ve got another kind of dip.

But wouldn’t that be more like a bean dip? Maybe. Savagerabbit’s Black and White Bean Dip sounds pretty tasty too. Wrap this in a tortilla or enjoy with… chips… or even cold veggies, if you want to take the healthy route.

Need a different kind of snack idea? We did mention portable snacks, and foodiewife’s shredded pork taquitos can be enjoyed anywhere. For a vegetarian treat, try rocknrolljane’s Garden Vegetable Bagel Sandwich.

I’ve already cheated. I enjoyed an early Thanksgiving feast at one of my favorite restaurants, I just could not wait. If you love turkey so much that you also find yourself cheating, or not complaining about generous amounts of Thanksgiving left overs, this post is for you!

What’s Thanksgiving without a turkey? Phowley’s written up everything we need to know about how to make a turkey, and cook it for the right amount of time! This is a great recipe for beginners, or if you need a bit of guidance after the big bird’s defrosted. Check out Phowley’s Blast Furnace-Roasted Turkey Recipe.

You’ll want to pack these for a great at-work lunch. They’ll fill you up and fill the office with the sweet aroma of Thanksgiving. If you’re worried about eating that extra slice of pie — don’t! Why? Because you’ll be enjoying devonrexkitty’s light Cool Turkey Pitas the next day. For a hot lunch, try Belinda’s Turkey Oven Sandwich.

What if you don’t want to wait for Thanksgiving leftovers. Go ahead and celebrate early with boanja’s Turkey Roast with Garden Vegetables, we won’t tell ;). Her recipe calls for a 2-3 pound turkey, perfect size for a hungry family or group of friends. If you’re cooking for two, you’ll probably have leftovers. But we like that, and we like that roscarson shared Jamie Oliver’s Turkey and Sweet Leek Pie recipe with us — great way to use the leftovers.

Here’s a tip: if you want to save a little money this holiday season but still want to savor the delicious taste of a freshly roasted turkey, go for just the turkey breast. Seal in the flavor and moisture by brushing the top layers with butter and baking the turkey an affordable oven bag!
