Satisfy your sweet tooth with some of our latest featured recipes. Need something fun and affordable to do over the weekend? Bake! Making your own baked goods from scratch is not only cheaper than buying the store bought ones, but it’s also a great way to entertain the family without having to leave the house :)! Here are some sweets everyone will love.

If you don’t want to turn on the oven, try Melissawelch’s Peanut Butter Chip Brittle. Reese’s Peanut Butter Chips get a makeover in this new version of a real classic. This is the kind of treat that’s meant to shared. If you’re planning a party, think about giving Melissa’s brittle away in a goodie bag.

Baker2LM’s Peanut Butter Brownie Bites look as good as they sound. Rich and chocolatey and a little peanut buttery, you’ll want to wash the bites down with a glass of milk. What I like about these is, unlike with brownies, you don’t have to slice them into squares because each brownie bite gets baked in a muffin tin.

If you’re not a big peanut butter fan, this next recipe is for you! Valernia’s Chocolate Espresso Mini Bites might be mini, she says, but they’re big on flavor. Coffee and espresso powder make them extra decadent, chocolate lovers will approve!

It’s officially the weekend, let’s get baking!

Lunch!

Posted in Recipes by sophie | No Comments

Need a few quick and affordable lunch ideas? Say goodbye to fast food. You can make most of these recipe in under half an hour. And if there’s chicken and a few veggies hiding in the fridge from your last trip to the grocery store, you might even be able to use them up today. I’d say that’s the best way to save money!

Whenever I make burgers, I usually have lettuce left over the next day. But ice berg lettuce isn’t always the most exciting ingredient to work with, you say. Try using it to make Crisscrossqz’s Chinese Chicken Salad, I know you’ll change your mind.

How about something really hearty? I like to keep a few strips of bacon in the freezer, just in case I don’t have time to prepare something fancy for lunch. Bacon is affordable and doesn’t take long to cook. What could you make with a strip of bacon? Bsherrill’s Bacon, Cheddar and Grilled Tomato Panini makes quite a lunch.

I know you’ve got a pound or two of ground meat in the fridge! If you don’t, think about picking some up on your next trip to the grocery store. Whether you prefer ground beef or turkey, both ingredients are great to have on hand for more than just burgers. And we’re not talking about making cafeteria style sloppy Joes, we’re talking about trying RWrigley’s Tango Joes. Because homemade is the way to go for lunch these days, be sure to try one of these recipes soon!

With temperatures reaching 100 degrees this past weekend, I was in the mood for a cool and refreshing side to enjoy with my dinner. Usually when I think of pasta, I think of warm, heavy tomato based sauces and lots of cheese. Here’s a recipe that’s a little different from your everyday spaghetti and meat sauce meal.

The next time you’re having sandwiches and chips for lunch, throw Sensei’s Mom’s Macaroni Salad together. It’s easy to whip up… which is definitely a good thing, considering how tasty it came out; we gobbled this up! Delicious is all I have to say!

I chose to try this recipe over the weekend because it’s easy to adapt. I love all kinds of veggies, so I threw in some frozen peas to cool down the salad even more! By the time I mixed everything together, the peas were already thawed out… that gives you an idea of how hot it was this weekend!

Berries and Cherries

Posted in Recipes by sophie | 1 Comment

You know it’s summer when berries and cherries line the produce aisles at the grocery store. If their vibrant colors don’t catch your eye, these recipes will! Sweet and tart, these desserts are delicious year around and can be made with frozen fruits, but they’re a little extra special when made with fresh berries or cherries.

If you’ve never gone berry picking, now is the time to go! The flavor of freshly picked blueberries is unbeatable. I think I want to try making Rwigley’s Cinnamon Blueberry Muffins the next time I have fresh berries on hand. A brunch isn’t complete without blueberry muffins.

Sharon’s Cherry Cheesecake is the dessert to make on a hot summer day. You don’t have to bake it and guess what else? You can make it in about 20 minutes!

Let’s not forget about the blackberry… the one you can eat ;)! Holschuh_Anna’s Blackberry Hand Pies come with a great pie crust recipe that’ll probably become a family favorite. Use it to make her blackberry hand pies or experiment with different fruits or even a savory filling.

Casseroles

You probably didn’t grow up eating these casserole dishes we’re about to share with you. They’re not just cheesy or full of noodles. Instead, they combine unique ingredients in a fresh way. Even the non-casserole eating member of the family will approve of these recipes.

Episcopo’s Mousakka is an Eggplant and Lamb Casserole. When you want a little something different than your everyday casserole, this is the meal to make. Grown ups will approve of the lamb meat sauce, spiced with nutmeg and oregano; kids will like the cream sauce that’s made with cottage and kasseri cheese.

Kwatson’s Zucchini Cornbread Casserole isn’t just a casserole. She says it can also be called a bread recipe, and maybe we can even call it a savory bread pudding. Kwatson’s casserole will definitely appeal to picky eaters; if you couldn’t get them to eat zucchini before, you’ll be surprised to see that they’ll eat it like this.

RachelThaPizzaCutta’s Sweet Potato Walnut Casserole is what I’ll be making for Thanksgiving this year. Rachel’s recipe is a family favorite that can be served as a side dish or dessert. Serve it cold with ice cream in the summer, who says you have to wait until fall to make a sweet potato casserole?

Bread

Posted in Recipes by sophie | No Comments

There’s something special about making homemade bread, it’s an experience for all of the senses. The feeling of gooey dough coming together as you knead it, the scent and magic of the yeast — watching it transform a concoction of flour and water into a sweet and savory masterpiece.

Bread is also one of those foods that doesn’t really have any limits; we eat toast for breakfast then enjoy sandwiches or pitas, like Savagerabbit’s Whole Wheat Pita Bread, for lunch. No matter how you slice it, bread is always delicious.

One classic bread recipe that’s both fascinating, tasty and versatile is potato bread. Carla says her Tender Potato Bread recipe would make great dinner rolls or focaccia bread.

And if you’re on a gluten-free diet, you can still enjoy Naomi’s Fig and Walnut Bread. Almond flour gives her bread a hearty, nutty texture that’s so good, you’ll find it hard to believe it really is gluten-free.

Bread can also be part of an amazing appetizer. For instance, Mbshah’s Vegetable Bread Baskets would make a great edible centerpiece, they are stunning. What’s impressive is that she shaped everyday slices of bread into little cheese baskets then stuffed them with veggies.

Whether you’re baking bread from scratch or using sandwich bread to make unforgettable appetizers, never underestimate what you can do with my personal favorite member of the carbohydrate family! :)

Comfort Food

Posted in Recipes by sophie | No Comments

There are a few recipes that are timeless. You’ll find them hidden away in grandma’s pantry. They’re usually written on index cards, covered in grease stains — evidence of how much they’ve been used. And even if grandma is usually the expert when it comes to comfort food, she might actually be the one asking you for tips when she gets a taste of what you’re serving up for this Sunday’s family dinner, one of these classics!

Dr. Mom’s Pot Roast with Caramelized Onions and Roasted Carrots
is the perfect recipe for those of us who still need to be convinced that comfort food can be elegant and delicious at the same time. Caramelized onions not only make everything taste better, but when prepared right, they can really transform a traditional meal into a formal dinner.

MyTastyTreasures Southern Friend Chicken is finger lickin’ good! It looks like it has just the right amount of crunch and it’s what you’ll want to serve at your next summer lunch. Fried chicken and long summer days go hand in hand.

There’s always room for dessert, especially when Lena’s Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies are served with an ice cold glass of milk. Banana bread, oatmeal cookies and chocolate chip cookies epitomize comfort food in the dessert category. Why not combine some of the best classic desserts in one? That’s what Jldeere does in this recipe she shared with us.

We’ve made sure to throw in a couple of different comfort food recipes in today’s post, so that you can satisfy everyone who’ll be gathered around your dinner table. But be sure to check out the other mouthwatering recipes our Key Ingredients have shared with us!

Sandwiches

Posted in Recipes by sophie | No Comments

Before you pack your picnic baskets for the summer beach trip, be sure to check out these sandwich recipes first. Bury the bologna sandwiches in the sand or feed them to the sea gulls; you’ll be enjoying a delicious sea food sandwich. Sobelle’s Soft Shell Crab Sandwiches are what’s for lunch. You won’t find these next to the cold cuts, even the tartar sauce is homemade, and it won’t take all afternoon to whip up.

Need something quick and filling to take on the road when you’re up before sunrise? DanielleNelson’s Brownbutter Fluffed Egg Sandwiches are the ideal portable breakfast. You can even make them the night before then heat them up before you hit the road.

How about a sweet and savory sandwich? Sophie32’s My Favourite Ricotta Sandwich is not exactly your everyday cheese sandwich. Sheep’s ricotta and balsamic are the savory part of a sandwich that gets topped off with fresh strawberries. Homemade sandwiches like these never looked so good.

Planning a birthday party this weekend? Good news, little kids and big kids love cupcakes, especially when they’re made with a creative twist. What else do we love about cupcakes? They usually come with more frosting than a piece of cake :).

Makingbananapancakes serves up a creative batch of cupcakes with her Blueberry and Strawberry Cupcakes with Whipped Cream Frosting. Fresh fruit tops off a light cake made with apple sauce, only a quarter cup of butter go into these berry lean cupcakes :).

The overripe brown bananas on your countertop will be making their way into the mixing bowl instead of the trash can when you hear about MyTastyTreasures Banana Cupcakes with Honey Cinnamon frosting. The bananas not only add great flavor, but they make these cupcakes extra moist.

You might’ve tried a banana cupcake before, but I bet you’ve never heard of porcalina’s French Toast and Bacon Cupcakes. Breakfast isn’t complete without maple syrup and these breakfast-inspired cupcakes aren’t complete until they’re frosted with homemade maple buttercream! Make these a part of your balanced breakfast or serve them at your next party, either way, they’ll be the dessert that everyone remembers.

Veggies!

Posted in Recipes, Web 2.0 by sophie | 1 Comment

It’s easy to chop up a few carrots and sautee them in butter, but I can’t say it’ll be easy to get everyone in the family to eat their veggies when dinner rolls around. Sure there are ways to sneak them in here and there, but what if we just found a new way to serve ‘em up. Instead of being the side we avoid and eat last, why can’t veggies be as exciting as the entree (or even the entree itself)?

Peach 106’s Minestrone Soup with Winter Vegetables is a recipe that’s always in season because it’s so versatile. What’s great about this soup is that you can remove the meat (pancetta) and still have a filling, flavorful meal. Of course, being the meat-eater I am, I’d add the pancetta and maybe even a little ham (yum!).

Bodanzarama shows us that we can have a filling burger without her ground beef if we make her Sprouting Chickpea Patties. Paul123 also has a great recipe for Homemade Veggie Patties — just look at how thick and juicy they are!

If you need to find a way to get the kids to eat their veggies, because they just don’t like anything green on their plates :), hide the veggies in something they love to eat! LobsterandFishsticks’ Zucchini Lasagna is lean and green! The green veggies, like spinach and zucchini, are hidden beneath delicious layers of pasta covered in sauce, cheese, and cottage cheese. This is family-friendly recipe and, I have to say, I really like the idea of using cottage cheese. If you’re sneaking in the veggies, why not sneak in the cottage cheese too :)?
