Durian Muffin
Posted in Recipes by Haley
The durian, an uncommon fruit in the west, is known as the “King of Fruit” in the east. Some have said of the durian that “it is of such an excellent taste that it surpasses in flavor all the other fruits of the world.” The durian’s delectable and sweet flavor has made it quite popular, but it’s rancid smell may be it’s most well known characteristic. In Southeast Asia the fruit is actually banned in public places, subways, and hotels because of its odiferous nature.
Disregarding her sense of smell and obeying her taste buds, Lydia has braved this praised fruit to produce delicious durian muffins. This recipe stinks!… in a good way! It’s high almond-like flavor is perfectly complimented by Lydia’s addition of vanilla, but I think it’s safe to say that this “King of Fruits” can stand on its own to give enough flavor and texture to these muffins. Lydia has several other durian recipes posted on her blog, In My Kitchen, including a layered cake and a pudding cake.
While the durian is definitely more popular in the east, it can be found in the U.S. as well. Tropical states such as Florida, Southern California and Hawaii produce fresh durian. The fruit may be hard to locate in your local grocery store, so try going to an Asian market.
